How to create a mindset for success

Many people want to achieve success, whether it be for a career, relationship, weight loss, financial or business goal. Whichever goal it may be, the first step to success is to have the right mindset.  There is a considerable amount of information available online about the complexities of the brain. But this post will have a narrow focus on mindset and more specifically, how to create a mindset for success.

So What Is A Mindset?

Basically, a mindset is a set of beliefs that we have about ourselves, other people, our circumstances and the way life is in general. A person’s mindset is very powerful and plays a big part in how we conduct ourselves on a day to day basis.

Evidence has shown that how you view yourself, can have major implications on how you lead your life. It can determine whether you become the person you want to be, who accomplishes their goals or not.

So first of all, you need to determine what mindset you currently have, then you can learn how to create a mindset for success. There are generally two types of mindset: a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.

A Fixed Mindset Holds You Back

A fixed mindset is based on the belief that your basic attributes are fixed and you cannot change or develop them. This mindset believes that your qualities are set in stone. People with this mindset would often say things like “Well that’s the way I am. There’s nothing I can do about it.”

Therefore, a person with a fixed mindset has limiting beliefs about themselves. They believe their talents and intelligence are set and if success doesn’t automatically come to them, then that’s the way things are. There’s nothing they can do about it – which is wrong.

A Growth Mindset Is What You Need For Success

How to create a mindset for successIn contrast, a growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic attributes can be changed or developed through your own efforts. Someone with a growth mindset may say something like “I need to try new things and push myself beyond my comfort zone”.

People with a growth mindset embrace change, learning, challenges and developing themselves. They are optimistic, focused, driven and resilient. This group believes that they are responsible for their life and set goals to create what they want.

They don’t sit back and complain about problems but look at possible opportunities to solve the problems and create something positive out of it.

How To Create A Mindset For Success

The mind is incredibly powerful. It’s like a supercomputer. Research is teaching us more and more about the power of our beliefs. Our conscious and unconscious mind can have a profound effect on our lives and when we make just simple changes, there can be rippling consequences on nearly every aspect of our lives. From my personal experience, I have discovered there are possibly two steps involved with creating a success mindset.

Step One: Release Disempowering Beliefs

This first part is releasing any negative and disempowering beliefs you have about yourself, your circumstances, your past and any worries you may have about the future. This relates to what you are consciously aware of and what you are not consciously aware of.

Depending on how old you are and how many negative experiences you’ve had throughout your life, it will determine how long Step One will take. If you have had a wonderful life and you feel positive and optimistic then go straight to Step Two.

But if you have had many stressful experiences, traumatic events or grief, then you will probably have a lot of hidden fears, worries, anger, resentment, jealousy or other negative beliefs and emotions stored up in your unconscious mind as a result.

In order to create a positive, growth mindset, you need to first dedicate yourself to getting rid of this disempowering baggage, as it may be a major hindrance to your success.

Releasing Methods Will Wipe The Slate Clean

There are a number of helpful methods that you can use to release disempowering beliefs and emotions. Try them all, then once you have determined your preferred choice, consistently practice the releasing technique every day. You are basically working on wiping the slate clean so you can start again with a nice, fresh outlook for the future.

Please don’t underestimate how important this step is. Now everything in my life is falling into place. I feel a sense of relief, empowerment and loads of optimism for the future.

It’s amazing how your outlook changes from what was once a bleak outlook, to a vision of excitement about the possibilities.

When you are feeling positive and empowered then you’re ready for Step Two.

Releasing Methods

Releasing methods is any practice or strategy you can use to set yourself free from oppressive thoughts, feelings, emotions, and beliefs. Take your time with this, as it will be liberating in the end. This is the time to be kind to yourself.


One of my favorite methods of releasing negative thoughts and beliefs is by using self- hypnosis. It is a very affordable and calming practice that you can use in the comfort of your own home. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Another option is the Emotional Freedom Technique. EFT is a gentle tapping technique (instead of needles) that stimulates the traditional Chinese acupuncture points. Another popular option is yoga.  Yoga is a spiritual practice that includes physical bodily positions, breathing techniques, and simple meditation. There are many physical benefits of regular yoga sessions. Benefits include improvements in muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and posture. Yoga may also help with mental and emotional problems. Finally, meditation is a technique for resting and clearing the mind and achieving an emotionally calm state.

Step Two: Fill Your Mind With Empowering Beliefs

In Step One you wiped the slate clean by getting rid of all the negative thoughts and beliefs that were holding you back. Now in Step Two, you want to fill your mind up with powerful thoughts and beliefs that will propel you forward, to do whatever it takes to become successful.

At this stage, you want to decide on your dreams and plan your goals. Now you need to work on having a laser focus, unstoppable motivation, proactive problem-solving ability, confidence, creativity, and resilience so that you can achieve your goals.

Positive Affirmations

Finally, positive affirmations are positive statements that you read, write, recite or listen to on a frequent and regular basis. The purpose of doing this is to instill new empowering thoughts into your unconscious mind. In time and with consistent repetition, your unconscious mind will begin to accept these words and thoughts as new beliefs.

You can write positive statements specifically around your goals and either read them, listen to them or create a PowerPoint video with images and music that you can view and read. This last method is fun and easy to make, and exciting to practice.

Master Your Mind and You Will Master Your Life

In summary, decide what you want from life and go out and get it. Do whatever it takes. Don’t give up or think you’re not good enough. Learn new skills. Find a mentor. Make plans. Set goals and go after them. This is a growth mindset – a mindset that’s willing to learn, grow and take on new challenges. This is the mindset you need to be successful.
